Aozora to Kumorizora (Manga review)
Thus an adorable romance blossomed amidst situations of life and death. As wonderful it sounds as cruel it is.
Taking small shells from life and with a little touch of fantasy, the author composed a momentous and dramatic love story. The manga is an adaptation of an old light novel written by Sugaru miaki, yes the same author whose works(Three days of happiness) to this day is climbing up the ranks in MAL. Aozora to Kumorizora is identical compared to his other works like; Your story, and pain pain go away, as it is themed on the same life-death romance.
How I personally long for such a meaningful love story, how little I get to read one of these. As we go through the typical Shoujo genre, we won’t find anything but senseless Doki Doki kind of cliché relationships, solely to satisfy the fandom. Even if we find one in the grotesque pile of rotted grains, you will miss those adult sentiments, not in a sexual sense. It means much more in point of view to dabble in topics like self-analysis, the importance of happiness and value life itself.
Sugaru Miaki’s stories teaches us how we should admire those little things of love and life, what is it to be loved by someone, how you return those feelings and how, in unfortunate circumstances, one gets attached so deeply to someone.
synopsis(taken from MAL)
A person who has the power to control people's bodies, uses it to make them commit suicide, would one day encounter a special target....
The story begins at a slow pace, yet the conversational panel filled with expressive interaction between the two main characters (Azure and Claude) about existence and demise, is what makes the chapters inescapable.
For one, death is a mare game. Without giving second thoughts, he finds the target and completes his job and for other, being in his position earlier, she has learnt the bitter truth of death, the pain of losing your loved ones and by accepting her sins, she longs for her end.
The characters are simple and through arts it's more understandable. No detailed background and no expressive emotions on the face of characters, yet, surprisingly, I enjoyed the art. It was apparent that the focus was on the relations and portrayed according to the protagonist's mood. For some, the chemistry between two might seem feeble, because like I mentioned it has no shoujo touch consisting glowy and bubbly effusive atmosphere. Although few sweet moments of togetherness are enough to suffice the readers like me.
The meaningful interactions of life, death and happiness made them closer to each other and the girl who once longed to die in the beginning, is now hanging on to hope. But their deaths are inevitable, sad, yet fulfilling. The story is so smooth and fluid without seeming forceful. I just went with the flow and might probably accept the end, trusting in the author.
“Taking away every reason she would want to die had become the reason for which I lived” They never knew what attachment felt like, so they were ready to take and give life but now found solace and comfort in each other. They develop through communications leading to an evaluation of their actions and past.
The supernatural touch makes you hook, while at the same time melancholic yet wholesome romance prepares you for sad end.
In the manga, as the focus is purely on the relationship of azure and claude, the inadequacy in deep explanation of supernatural phenomenon is inevitable. The criteria to become a cleaner is understandable after a few reads. But one thing is still left unanswered. While capturing the target's body, was there any condition provided to what kind of body is free to be captured , is the one who has gone through some psychological trauma or the one who is happy and fulfilled in life? However, at one instance Claude conversation approved that there were no reasoning behind the target , they were assigned the task which they had to carry out no matter what.
With only 17 chapters, the story holds the capacity to entice the readers, which is not surprising for miscellanies of Sugaru's work. And the 17th chapter being my favourite captures the soft moment spent by the couple.
Covering up the story in few chapters(its on update and one could predict the ending ), has its own limitations. Azure and Claude is no different in this regard as it requires more chapters to accentuate the hidden ambivalence, for which I am patiently and eagerly waiting .
Nevertheless, the manga was a short and delightful read. Some twists and unexpected event keeps you lock at it, not to mention ,the ending, everyone must be looking forward to. It's sad how some unworthy work get updated in no time while gems like these remain unnoticed and takes months for translations.
